You’re on the phone, you say your name… and the other person doesn’t understand. Then they say: “A wie …?”

And suddenly you realize that you’re expected to spell your name the German way.

In Germany, spelling your name is something you’ll do more often than you think: at the doctor’s office, on the phone with customer service, at the bank, when giving your email address, etc.

That’s why learning the German Buchstabiersystem is so important. It helps you avoid misunderstandings and communicate clearly and confidently.

Here is the German spelling system:

Please note: This is the traditional version of the German spelling alphabet (DIN 5009), which was officially used until 2022. In 2022, the standard was updated and partly replaced with city names. However, many people in Germany still use this older version in everyday situations — especially on the phone.
